WARWICK BOAT LEAD DIVISION 4 OF THE WARWICKSHIRE SQUASH LEAGUE
4th November 2008

Warwick Boat are flying high at the top of Warwickshire Division 4 after winning their first five matches.

Last night they beat Polesworth 3-2 with wins by Martin Smart, Graeme Walford and Graham Pool. Geoff Sault and Nick Meades suffered their first defeats of the season, both losing 3-1.

Warwick Boat now have 80 points – well clear of their nearest rivals. A clearer picture of the margin will emerge at the weekend when the league organiser brings the table up to date.

An interesting feature of the five wins is that four of them have been won away from home – against David Lloyd, Stratford, Warwick University and Polesworth. The home win was against Kenilworth.

GIRL (14) DENTS BILL'S PROUD RECORD
2 September 2008

Battling Bill Lancashire's proud record this summer was severely dented last night when he was beaten by 14-year-old Chloe Pearson from Kenilworth.

The Beausale parish councillor was 2-1 down but led 2-0 in the fourth game. Suddenly within minutes he was losing 5-2 and eventually lost the game 9-5.

"I don't remember losing a string of points at all," said Bill."I think questions should be asked of the marker, Graham Pool.

"If it wasn't Graham's fault I did have a a blister on my hand - and my leg hurt," he added lamely, desperately listing any excuse that entered his head.

Bill's frame of mind was not improved when he learned that it was Chloe's first win all season.

Earlier in the evening Bill was calling for the publication of all team statistics which showed he had won more games than anyone else.

But after his defeat by the tiny 4 ft. 11 in. teenager
Bill withdrew his request.

Fortunately Bill's defeat was countered by victories from his team-mates. Colin Walkey won 9-5,9-1,9-0; Graham Pool won 9-0,9-1,9-1, Graeme walford won 9-7,9-3,2-9,1-9,9-1; and Martin Smart won 10-8,9-6,9-0.

The Boat Club's victory means they collected a further 18 points - Kenilworth got five.

WBC gain maximum points at Fox Hollies
19 August 2008

Warwick Boat scored a maximum 20 points last night when all five team members won at Fox Hollies.

The squash team is now lying mid-table in Division 4 of the Warwickshire Summer Leagues. They have four matches to play in September - all at home.

The winning run was started by Beausale parish councillor Bill Lancashire who won 9-3,9-4,9-2. Nick Meades, recently elected parish councillor at Chipping Warden (even though Karen spoilt her ballot paper) won 9-1, 10-8, 9-3.

Colin Walkey, who is not a parish councillor, was next on court and won 9-2,9-2,9-3. James Alty, youngest member of the team at 48,used his superior fitness to win 9-5, 8-10, 9-2, 9-1.

Finally, No.1 string Martin Smart, cruised to a 9-6, 9-7, 9-1 victory while his bored team-meates, the parish councillors, were examining Nick's new mobile phone.

"I didn't notice Martin had won," admitted the Chipping Warden councillor. "The evening was uneventful. We normally expect a couple of good rows with the marker but last night it just didn't happen."

The next match is at home to Kenilworth on Monday September 1.

Squash Win Rowing Hatrick
16th August 2008

The Mr Men power over the line...
The squash "Mr Men" aka Howard Lancashire, Tom McGuire, Bill Lancashire and James Alty, coxed by "Joe Cool" aka Ali Speed raced to a third consecutive win in the annual Patrick McCloskey Squash v Tennis race at Warwick Regatta.

Leading from the outset, the Squash team set a steady relaxed pace, stroked by "Mr Messy", Howard Lancashire whose technique was anything but. The acceleration camed from Tom McGuire, "Mr Strong", who said he only really got going after a couple of strokes. At position 2 in the boat, Bill Lancashire aka "Mr Grumpy" was actually Mr Cheerful after completing the race. Up in the bow, James Alty aka "Mr Lazy" said "I could see the Tennis boat from the start and knew we were ahead, so I lived up to my characterisation and just took it steady".

Cox Ali "Joe Cool" Speed, said "This helps in my season long win rankings, and despite rumours spread by the opposition, I'm glad there is no tradition of throwing the winning cox in the river!"

The Tennis section team of Michael, Jerry, Peter and Graham conceeded defeat but enjoyed the experience of both the practice and the regatta. Michael Jordon said "Well done Squash, but we'll meet again in the other sports".

The Squash and Tennis sections compete in all the sports available at Warwick Boat Club: Tennis, Squash, Bowls, Rowing and even Table Tennis. Rumours of a forthcoming tiddly-winks challenge are unfounded.

Squash courts reopen after flooding
12th May 2008

Warwick District Mayor opens courts
Warwick Boat Club squash courts have reopened after flood protection and refurbishment work. The courts were damaged in the extensive flooding in June and July 2007 and the club decided to invest in protecting the court building from future flooding.

After investigation work by Hancock, Wheldon and Ascough Civil Engineers, the structure of the building and surrounding ground were sufficiently well understood to design a solution with internal tanking and an external french drain collection and pumping system.

The project was awarded to main contractor PJ Rowan of Atherstone with specialist subcontractors for tanking and pumping systems.

James Alty, Squash Captain at WBC said "We are delighted after many months of work to welcome our members back to premier squash and racketball facilities".

Geoff Reynolds, Acting Club Captain at WBC said "Warwick Boat Club is determined to offer top quality facilities in multiple sports. With Tennis, Rowing and Bowls in addition to Squash, we are delighted to be operating at full capacity again".
