WARWICK TOWN TRIPLES TROPHY FINALS DAYS

The 2016 Warwick Town Trophy Finals Day took place at Warwick Boat Club on Sunday August 7th; The Trophy dates back to 1914.The Semi-Finals commenced at 10.00 am in glorious weather; the Semi Finalists were:

On Rink 4 TEAM A - Playing 'Home': Les Collins (Skip, Jean Smithard (2), Sue Sandher (Lead) - TEAM B - Playing 'Away': Greville Reader (Skip), John Loveridge (2), June Wright (Lead).

Greville Reader's Team B took an immediate lead of 6 shots on the first two ends extending this to 13/2 by end 5. Team A appeared to have difficulty in reading the green scoring only a further 7 shots on the remaining ends, compared with the Team B who took a total of 20 shots on the last 13 ends winning the game and ensuring their place in the final with an overall score of 33/9.

On Rink 3 TEAM C - Playing 'Away': David Carson's (Skip), Peter Gawthorpe (2), Christine Lewis (Lead) - TEAM D - Playing 'Home': Lyn Taylor (Skip), John Labrum (2), Peter Boardman (lead). Lyn Taylor's Team D commenced very strongly taking a 6 shot lead on the first end; David Carson and his Team C matched this by the 4th end; over the next 6 ends Team D notched up a further 11 shots (16/6). Team C tried a 'comeback' with 4 shots on 3 ends but Taylor's team, playing brilliantly, scored 5 and 6 shots respectively on ends 10 and 11 taking their total score to 28/15 to settle their place in the final.

Following a break for lunch the final took place with temperatures soaring into the 70's.

The final was played on Rink 2 with Team D playing 'Home' and Team B playing 'Away, and what a final it was! Considering they had all played 18 ends earlier in the day and the very high temperature both teams were brilliant, playing a very tight game for the full 18 ends. Team B took an early lead with 3 shots, overtaken by Lyn Taylor's squad who took the next 2 ends for a total of 8 shots, from then on it was neck and neck, with one side holding the 'Jack' for 3 or 4 shots, only to have the opposing Skip take and follow the jack to take the end. Some 'jacks' were exceptionally long; The referee, Barry Grant, had to use his tape measure on one occasion and on end 14, June Wright's 'Jack' was so long the measuring pole had to be brought into play, her first 'wood' took the 'jack' to the very edge of the green, where it stayed until eventually sent into the ditch, followed by a number of woods from both sides. A final 'measure' gave the end to team D by 2 shots. At end 15 Lyn Taylor's squad led 14/10 - Greville Reader's team held their cool and by end 18 had scored a further 4 shots - creating an equal score of 14/14 - a draw! On the advice of referee Barry Grant, it was agreed an extra end should be played and what a nail biting end it was, the lead's and number 2's each vying to score; when the two skips took up their woods the situation was tense, with one wood still to be played by each skip and with Team B's woods surrounding the jack. However, taking her time and judging the line brilliantly Lyn Taylor sent up her last wood, took the jack well away from the opponents woods, and stayed with it, giving her Warwick Boat Club Team D the winning score of 15/14.
