I have been a member of Warwick Boat Club tennis section for approximately 25 years but have only really got to fully enjoy all the club has to offer since retiring from full time work.
My career in the global automotive industry took our family to numerous countries from the USA to Turkey, then Switzerland and Germany. We came to Warwickshire and joined WBC when I ran Jaguar Cars. Since leaving full time executive life, I have Chaired or been a Non-Executive Director at various organisations including British Cycling, the Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Auto1 Group and the Organising Committee for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
As a family we’ve enjoyed going through the full Gavin and Jenny & Jackie tennis production line. While both of our kids now live in the USA, Maxine and I enjoy a wide range of the social and competitive tennis on offer across the club. Most recently I’ve played in a variety of Men’s, Mixed, and Vets teams as well as venturing into the world of ITF Masters single tournaments.
I have now been Tennis Captain and Chair of the Tennis Committee for two years. This year started in dramatic fashion with the January 3rd floods. With amazing support from many volunteers, we got the club back up and running in record time. With the Tennis Committee and support from the General Committee, we achieved a strong insurance settlement and then conducted a thorough review of new court options and suppliers that resulted in the new synthetic clay courts and court surrounds being completed on budget and ahead of schedule in August. This was the most visible change at the club for quite some time but should not detract from the huge variety of excellent volunteer led work that is going on throughout our section. I’ll look forward to discussing this in more detail and my thoughts about the future at the Tennis AGM.
I continue to be excited about our future as a high performing, yet social and family friendly tennis club and stand ready to continue in this role for another year if supported by members.
